kosmickat and pyannaguy are absolutely correct. Chuck Berrys genius was in his lyrics. His guitar playing was T Bone Walker, in fact check out Louis Jordans 1946 Aint that Just Like a Woman- recognize the guitar intro?

Chuck was the first to say it was nothing more than a job to him, albeit one which he was very good at. And yes, you didn’t get Chuck Berry without paying, but why not, other people made millions from his music why not him? IMHO, after so many years of playing he was a master of the minimum. Also, no one artist stands alone, well maybe just a few (can you say Cab Calloway?), but most stand on one anothers shoulders, as it is in most disciplines.

  12. pyannaguy says:

There would have been no Chuck Berry without the great T-Bone Walker. He was twice the guitar player Chuck ever was (without saying saying much – Chuck will admit he didn’t work any harder than he had to to get paid and laid).

Chuck was a lot of fun, and he got his due – but T-Bone had a lot of soul – brought the electric guitar to the front of the stage and was a real blues and jump blues innovator.

Check him out. Bands still play his “T-Bone Shuffle.”
